"Mother Earth just closed up the drapes on another Year"

"If winter is slumber and spring is birth, and summer is life, then autumn rounds out to be reflection. It's a time of year when the leaves are down and the harvest is in and the perennials are gone. Mother Earth just closed up the drapes on another year and it's time to reflect on what's come before."
Mitchell Burgess (From TV series Northern Exposure, Thanksgiving, 1992.)

As we 'close up the drapes on another year', our hearts are filled with gratitude.

"Splendor of Ended Day" in Acadia

Quotes from Song at Sunset (by Walt Whitman) ...

"SPLENDOR of ended day, floating and filling me! "

Views from my window on a rainy October evening in Acadia
"You, Earth and Life, till the last ray gleams, I sing. "

"Illustrious the passing light! "

"Illustrious whatever I see, or hear, or touch, to the last. "

"Wonderful to be here! "

"How the clouds pass silently overhead! "

"How the trees rise and stand up—with strong trunks—with branches and leaves! "
"O amazement of things! "

"O setting sun! though the time has come,
I still warble under you, ....., unmitigated adoration."

Beautiful Spirits are Breathing Now

"There is a beautiful spirit breathing now

Its mellow richness on the clustered trees,

And, from a beaker full of richest dyes,

Pouring new glory on the autumn woods,

And dipping in warm light the pillared clouds."

(Autumn…by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow)

Where the Wild Things Are

"People need wild places. Whether or not we think we do, we do. We need to be able to taste grace and know again that we desire it.

We need to experience a landscape that is timeless, whose agenda moves at the pace of speciation and glaciers.
Photo of Acadia , by my friend Ben Kimball

To be surrounded by a singing, mating, howling commotion of other species, all of which love their lives as much as we do ours, and none of which could possibly care less about us in our place.

It reminds us that our plans are small and somewhat absurd. It reminds us why, in those cases in which our plans might influence many future generations, we ought to choose carefully.

Looking out on a clean plank of planet earth, we can get shaken right down to the bone by the bronze-eyed possibility of lives that are not our own."  - Barbara Kingsolver

Getting Back Up is Living

I recently saw this quote posted on Twitter (@gramepat) and Facebook (Pat Cooney Foster) ...and wanted to share these words of wisdom...

An old woman once said.."There comes a time in life, when you walk away from all the drama and people who create it. You surround yourself with people who make you laugh, forget the bad, and focus on the good. So love the people who treat you right, pray for the ones who don't. Life is too short to be anything but happy. Falling down is a part of life, GETTING BACK UP IS LIVING."

"Pick yourself up. Dust yourself off. And Start all over again"
